Antique solid brass Lionel Corporation New York wagon odometer is in great condition and comes with its original leather case with interior tin lining that holds the odometer in place. Designed to be strapped to the wagon wheel which then records each revolution of the wheel to determine miles traveled. The case is marked THE LIONEL MFG. Many applications including measuring distance when wagon trains were traveling, surveying, mapping and military during World War I. Very rare and interesting piece of history.
Along with the odometer you will get a facinating stack of documemts and correspondence between a previous owner and multiple organizations detailing his research into this item... Trying to figure out what it was! There are letters to and from the Smithsonian, Yankee Magazine, Mooshead Lake Railroad and the Lionel Corporation. It makes one appreciate the ease of research nowadays thanks to the internet! These documents along with this very rare item truly make this a one of a kind collection. Please look closely at pictures for detail and condition. The odometer appears to work as the dial/numbers change with each rotation but I can't speak to it's accuracy as I don't have a wagon to strap it to ###128518; ###128517.
The leather case is in good shape considering it's well over 100 years old, but the strap has a repair to it and likely needs more attention if you wish to buckle it completely.
