Silver Plate Mounted leather & Silk Lined. Top Hat Travel Case or Suitcase. A lovely Victorian period vintage piece of luggage in the form of a Top hat case. Overall the case is in good solid clean antique condition as can be seen in the photographs, the leather has a very nice patina and silver plate lock (no key) are in fully operational order. The interior is red shot silk although with original retaining straps and top hat compartment.

The very interesting part comes with the original White Star transit lable to the side. It is for the White star liner "SS Pitsburgh" for the voyage from Southampton to New York. The passenger name is "Lindell". On the Titanic passenger list were a couple "Mr Edvard Bengsson and Mrs Ellin Gurda Lindell" from Sweden, both drowned in the Titanic tragedy.

The Pittsburgh was originally laid down for the American Line of Liverpool in November 1913, but building was halted during the First World War. She was launched on November 11, 1920 and completed in White Star Line colors on May 25, 1922. She made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Boston on June 6, 1922. After that, she made voyages to Boston from Hamburg and Bremen.

In November 1922 she rescued the crew of the sinking Italian cargo vessel Monte Grappa. In January 1925 the Pittsburgh went to the Red Star Line, registered under British flag for F.

She made her first Red Star voyage on January 20, 1925 from Antwerp-Southampton-New York. In February 1926 she was renamed Pennland.

In May 1940 the re-named The Pennland she was chartered to British Ministry of War Transport and refitted as troop transport. On April 25, 1941 the Pennland was bombed and sunk by German aircraft in the Gulf of Athens.
