1880s Antique Assiniboin Sioux Lakota Leather Beaded Awl Case Purse Native American sinew beaded awl case. Beaded on commercial leather using greasy yellow beads and white hearts the bead sizes are 11/0 or 10/0 trade beads. Theres one line missing but overall great condition for its age. Some bone hair pipe bone beads and brass beads used on the string to hang it up.
Includes the original bone awl which appears to be smooth I believe they used rocks for this as there are marks on it seemingly scratches from a rock. I acquired the item in a Native Art Gallery in Alberta where they sell antiques and contemporary art.
According to the shop owner the item originated from the United States and he got it from a private collector. My estimate is that the item is from 1880s-1890s however it may be older. It is most likely Assiniboin as the designs used are Sioux however the beading techniques applied on both sides are flat stitch which the Sioux did hardly used however flat stitch was very commonly applied by the Assiniboin(Nakoda Sioux). Sadly there is no proof of authenticity but the item is definitely original as it is evident from the ageing and beads used, it comes from a reliable source Wild West Gallery Wetaskiwin feel free to contact the owner with images he will provide additional information if requested.
